I've posted the following on another thread but have reposted it to give you a background to my question.

David McNally born about 1808/1811 in Ireland. Possible parents were Francis and Martha McNally.

At some point David emigrated to Scotland. He married Margaret (sorry I don't know her surname) who was Scottish (probably not from Glasgow) and born roughly about 1820(according to the 1841 census) in Scotland.
They had a child called John born about 1833 in Scotland (again not born in Glasgow).

At some point moved to Glasgow where Martha McNally was born about 1835.
They then had a son called David McNally born about 1841 in Lanarkshire.

On the 1841 census they were living at Buchan Street, Kirkfield, Glasgow which I believe is in Gorbals area, David McNally was listed as a Sugar baker.

The family moved to Liverpool by the time of the 1851 census and David's wife Margaret had died (not sure whether in Glasgow or Liverpool). David remarried (I believe in 1847 in Liverpool to Mary Fraser who may have been Irish but I suspect was Scottish for some reason).

Question: What level of education (if any) would the children have likely have received living in this area? ie what subjects would they have studied, would they have gone to school, if so, would they have gone to catholic school? What schools were in the area they lived at that time?

Also, how would they have learnt about Catholicism? Did Sunday school exist?

Many thanks

I live in Edinburgh and have no knowledge of Glasgow but suggest you try School Archives at Glasgow Mitchell Library. Good Luck. Pat
