Unfortunately, there is limited reference to place of origin in Ireland contained in Scottish Catholic parish registers

Indeed. I did read however, in the NAS' publication 'Tracing Your Scottish Ancestors', that after a death, reference might be made to a person's parish of origin during the Vigil for the Deceased, and that this might be recorded in the death/burial records of the parish.

The death/burial records of the Catholic Church in Scotland were not maintained very well I'm afraid. We have located all extant registers and included them in the digitisation programme currently underway, and full catalogues of what we hold will be made available soon.

It is always worthwhile to remember that post-1855, Scottish civil marriage and death certificates name the parents - there could of course be errors or ommissions and it doesn't pinpoint a place in Ireland, but certainly gives that little bit more of the jigsaw.

It is worth searching for poor relief applications, however, particularly after a spouse has died. They often name the parish or county of origin in Ireland. Records are patchy though - Glasgow has some brilliant records at the Mitchell Library, Edinburgh virtually none.

Also, some Irish people were returned to their parish of origin in Ireland when they tried to claim poor relief in Scotland. Raymond's County Down website at www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com/html/index2.htm has a list of those returned to Ireland in 1867, 1869, and 1875-78. The database lists the parish of residency in Scotland, and the place in Ireland to where they were returned.
